Energy and real estate matters are a significant aspect of our firm. Practice in the mineral area was originally developed because coal, oil and natural gas are such substantial industries in West Virginia and Kentucky.

Our clients are owners, operators, producers and contractors ranging in size from the dominant international corporations to small, locally owned businesses. Our service includes both complex and simple purchase and sale transactions and related financing arrangements; litigation matters involving real estate or mineral lease and contract preparation; title examinations; and other issues generated by the mining, oil, and natural gas industries. We also represent clients in major commercial and mineral sales and acquisitions, complex transactions typically involving a concentrated effort over a short time period.

With an extensive real estate practice in land use and development law, we represent clients in planning, zoning, and other land use matters, including compliance with state and federal sales registration requirements. We have vast experience in general land use and development, representing both large and small developers proposing industrial, commercial and residential projects, including condominium law. This representation has encompassed all aspects of land use, planning, zoning and other developments with the myriad of filings, approvals, permits, title searches and insurance, and other requirements.

We also devote considerable time to energy, environmental and real estate issues outside normal practice. We have encouraged various members of our firm to prepare papers and participate in seminars for professional groups active in these areas. We have actively participated in the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation since its inception. Our former senior partner, Paul Bowles, now deceased, served as an adjunct professor at West Virginia University College of Law, instructing a course in Coal, Oil and Gas. One of our current partners now carries on this tradition.
